His gaze is distant yet compassionate, promising wisdom to the desert travellers. Flying musicians play the pipa backwards in the air; their ribbons weave through the constellations, turning the cave ceiling into a river of light.

Under Yuan-dynasty eaves, the Archer has become a Chinese horseman drawing an invisible bow toward the infinite. His arrow is made of light itself. The cave is small, almost secret, yet filled with thousands of tiny Buddhas watching the centaur’s eternal hunt for truth across the starry steppe that once linked Chang’an to Rome.

Northern Zhou artists transformed the scorpion into a dragon-headed guardian beast, claws raised in fierce protection. Its tail curls like storm clouds around the twenty-eight lunar mansions. Deep reds and charcoal blacks dominate; the creature’s eyes glow with the intensity of tantric star worship that travelled from India through Khotan to this cliff face.

Late-Tang twin boys — no longer Greek youths — embrace beneath a canopy of flying celestials. One holds a lotus of wisdom, the other a scroll of poetry. Their ribbons entwine like DNA of the Silk Road itself: Persian, Sogdian, Indian and Chinese threads braided into a single dance of duality, communication, and eternal friendship.

In the Yulin cliffs, the sea-goat becomes a dragon-headed fish leaping through lotus waves — China’s answer to the Himalayan makara. Gold outlines shimmer against faded vermilion; its eyes hold the wisdom of mountains and oceans. Every scale is a reincarnated soul swimming toward the next kalpa under the eternal vigil of the Bodhisattvas.
